As part of her residency, Golden Thread is producing the world premiere of her biting comedy Arab Spring (June 19-July 12, co-produced with SFBATCO). Her new play, A Country Made of Salt received a workshop production earlier this year as part of our Festival of Palestinian Art. Later this year, Golden Thread will support the development of An Experiment in Divination, a solo theatrical encounter inviting audiences to explore how we make meaning in an uncertain world.
“Denmo Ibrahim has been a vital artistic voice within the Golden Thread community for years, and we are thrilled to welcome her as our 2026 Playwright in Residence,” says Artistic Director Nabra Nelson. “Her work is marked by its humor, humanity, and extraordinary ability to connect personal stories to larger questions of history, identity, and belonging. Across her work in Arab Spring, A Country Made of Salt, and An Experiment in Divination, Denmo continues to broaden the presence and possibilities of MENA stories in the U.S. theatre landscape. We are honored to support her work and to share it with audiences throughout this milestone season.”
Denmo has been involved with the company as an artist since 2003. Golden Thread commissioned and produced Denmo’s first play ECSTASY | a waterfable. She has also appeared on Golden Thread’s stages numerous times – most recently in Yussef El Guindi’s Our Enemies: Lively Scenes of Love and Combat.
Denmo adds: “Being Golden Thread’s Playwright in Residence during its 30th anniversary season feels like coming full circle. My very first commission, Ecstasy | a waterfable, was through Golden Thread and helped launch my career as a playwright. To have the opportunity to create, develop, and premiere three new projects with a city and artistic community that have shaped me for more than 20 years is a tremendous honor. Golden Thread audiences bring a rare combination of curiosity, intelligence, and generosity, and I know they are ready to engage with stories that embrace complexity, humor, and contradiction.”
